There is a frustration at the lack of understanding of health and safety in the workplace, with failure to properly train employees and ignoring tell-tale warning signs when they appear, two of the main causes. In addition, all too often businesses get caught up in the detail and lose focus in areas that could make a major difference. Businesses need to refocus their health and safety efforts and apply common sense

What we're missing in most health and safety situations is a dose of common sense. Apply this common sense and we'll see businesses focusing on the core issues that keep people safe and save lives, not making a mockery of misinterpreted law. Businesses need to take a look at the big picture.

Is this the end of statutory health and safety inspections?

The prospect of "self-managed" health and safety could be only a matter of months away. Businesses looking to take advantage of this scheme will have to engage with their primary authority and demonstrate the ability to self-regulate as well as providing evidence of due diligence. Of course, authorities will still respond to reported events, as they should do, but they will avoid regular inspections.
